Foundations Matter

A structure is only as good as its foundation! An abundance of time, energy and resource goes into planning, preparing and building a strong foundation!

As followers of Jesus, our foundation should be Jesus, He is our rock! If we build our lives on Him, then the storms and earthquakes that we experience as we walk through life will not bring us down.

Every follower of Jesus has a personal responsibility to develop strong and deep foundations. The responsibility lies with us - not a pastor or discipleship group leader - we need to develop spiritual disciplines in our lives. These include devotion to the Word (meaning the Bible), prayer, fasting, and a lifestyle of faith, spiritual growth and generosity.

FIRM FOUNDATION

01 Sin and Salvation

The primary story of the Bible is how God saved man from sin. Because we are all sinners, we can’t save ourselves. But because God is loving, He made a way to save us through Jesus Christ

Origin Story

In the beginning, God created us to have a personal relationship with Him, but man chose to rebel against God.

Genesis 3.7-9 NLT

At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. 8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?"

The Results of Sin

The consequence of sin is death - spiritually and physically

Romans 6.23 NLT

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

God's Solution for Sin

Jesus' death and resurrection is God's solution for sin. Christ paid the penalty for our sins and reconciled us to God.

2 Corinthians 5.21 NLT

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Receiving God's Gift: A New Heart

In Christ we are made new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Grace Through Faith

We are saved by grace through faith in Christ’s finished work, not by our good works.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
